UH-1D (Huey) 65-09584 was allocated to the 173rd Assualt Helicopter Company (AHC), the Robin Hoods, in Vietnam. The unit was based in “Sherwood Forest” at Lai Khe, 50 km North of Saigon. The 173rd AHC was part of the 11th Combat Aviation Battallion of the 1st Aviation Brigade in Vietnam.

Huey 584 was flown in single helicopter support (ash & trash) and in multi-helicopter combat assault flights from January through August 1966. Its final Vietnam flight on 30 Aug 1966 ended when ground fire severed a control cable, which resulted in an uncontrolled hard landing and a roll onto its side.

Huey 584 was returned to Corpus Christi for repair and upgrade to “UH-1H” model configuration. It further served in a number of units stateside and around the world, but never returned to Vietnam. Notable deployments include an assignment to South Korea and an assignment to the Panama Canal Zone. It was in service until 1996.
